Why indoor air pollution is too important to ignore

Why indoor air pollution is too important to ignore

Indoor air pollution can cause serious health issues, however, using Little Knight paint in your home can help improve your living environment.

The issue of ill-health caused by indoor air pollution has, until recently, been largely overshadowed by the attention focused on air pollution outdoors and the problem of industrial and transport emissions.

Growing understanding of the causes of indoor pollution

Little Knights is among those working to raise awareness and, thankfully, there is a growing understanding of how indoor air pollutants can cause health problems such as respiratory inflammation, skin problems and asthma.

It’s important we learn about indoor pollution because of our lifestyle. Research shows that the average person in the UK spends up to 90% of their time indoors while it has also been shown that almost three-quarters of children spend less than an hour outside each day.

No surprise then that Britain is one of the worst countries in Europe for asthma levels – around 5.4million people – with death rates from asthma reaching their highest level in more than a decade.

Contaminants in the indoor environment are more than 1,000 times more likely to be inhaled than outdoor air.

People who may be exposed to indoor air pollutants for the longest periods of time - such as the young, the elderly and the chronically ill – are often the worse affected.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde can be found in furniture, cleaning products, air fresheners, paints and carpets. Research suggests VOCs can irritate the lungs, particularly in children.

Concentrations of these chemicals can be up to 10 times higher indoors than they are outdoors.

The NHS says moulds found on walls can produce allergens, irritants and, sometimes, toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mould spores may cause an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and skin rash. Moulds can also cause asthma attacks.

Improving indoor air quality – why we have developed Little Knights

Improving the quality of air in homes is an issue close to our hearts at Little Knights and a key driver for why we have developed our paints. Our nursery range it is as safe as household paint gets – it is odourless, non-allergenic and 100% VOC free.

What’s more, Little Knights paint actively helps to improve the quality of the air in homes.  This is because it contains a unique monomer that bonds with formaldehyde molecules that have been released from other household products and transforms them into harmless vapour.

Our paints also have an anti-bacterial additive developed by our parent company, Tetramass, which means dangerous mould and mildew is inhibited by Little Knights paint.

We will continue to raise awareness of the important issue of indoor pollution and are happy to discuss what you can do to improve the air quality in your home and how Little Knight paints can help. Please contact us on 01604 781009 or email info@little-knights.co.uk
