Choosing the right paint for your baby's cot could be the difference between giving them a healthy childhood and with health problems, such as breathing problems and skin rashes.
This is because conventional water-based paints – even those marketed as 'eco-friendly' - typically contain compounds called PGEs (propylene glycol and glycol ethers) which scientists have shown cause substantially higher rates of asthma, stuffy noses and eczema in children who are regularly exposed to them.
Little Knights paints, on the other hand, have been specifically developed to be free of all harmful chemicals and are designed to be kind to young babies who will be sleeping in the cot for months and often gnawing and chewing at the surface, especially if they are teething.
A key difference between the Little Knights range and conventional paints is that Little Knights paint does not give off any fumes when are applied. That’s because, unlike standard paints, Little Knights contain no toxic chemicals called VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
It is VOCs that are responsible for that paint smell. These emissions are harmful and cause dizziness and nausea in young children. In worse cases they have been associated with cancer, and liver kidney damage, and damage to the central nervous system.
If that wasn't scary enough, there is a noxious substance called formaldehyde, found in most homes and used in a wide range of everyday products - from flooring and furniture to air fresheners and even mattresses. It is proven to cause respiratory problems and irritation to eyes and skin - and young children who are exposed to it are especially vulnerable.
That is why, when we were developing Little Knights, one of our key focusses was a revolutionary formula, which means our paints can also filter out harmful compounds, such as formaldehyde, from the air. Our paint contains a unique monomer that bonds with formaldehyde molecules on contact and transforms them into harmless vapour.
Our paint literally cleans the air around a cot - creating a healthier environment for the child.
Another crucial factor in why Little Knights is the perfect choice for young parents, is that is has been developed to be antibacterial and easy to wipe down – ideal for cot paint and essential in preventing your child from picking up nasty stomach bugs or worse.
It is fully certificated and proven effective against ALL known bacteria (even antibiotic-resistant strains) including those that cause sickness, diarrhoea, meningitis, MRSA and salmonella.
The unique antibacterial additive used in Little Knights paint kills bacteria on contact, making it harder for mould and fungi to establish, unlike with some natural paint ranges which are often recommended as "family safe". (See our blog: The problem with "eco" and "natural" paints.)
It is only natural you want the best for your young child and when it comes to cot paint the best for health is Little Knights.
Either silk or eggshell or silk from the Little Knights paint range would be ideal for painting a cot.

Choosing the right colour paint for any room in your home can be a challenging, sometimes head-scratching task. The appearance and behaviour of colour is influenced by the amount of ambient light present in a room and the amount of colour that can be seen...
For a solid, flat and elegant finish that is easy to touch up when required, matte paint is ideal for creating a gentle, soothing finish. It helps to conceal flaws too, making it a good choice for older walls with "character".
Has slightly more lustre than a matte finish, low-sheen rather than shiny. This attractive finish resists stains better than matte paint, and is easier to maintain
Creates an attractive and highly durable high sheen finish, an ideal choice if you want to make a room look bigger. While it is the easiest to clean (just wipe with a damp cloth) Silk paint’s light reflecting properties do make it more difficult to touch up because any difference in sheen will be apparent. It will make imperfections in your walls more noticeable, so it is worth investing a bit of extra time on surface preparation to make your walls as smooth as possible.
Even our gloss paint is zero-VOC! An easy-to-apply, non-drip antibacterial gloss paint that provides a hardwearing, wipe-clean finish for interior and exterior wood and metal. (Please note, the gloss does not share the formaldehyde-absorbing properties of the emulsion paint, but there's still no safer gloss paint on the market!)
