Why low VOC paint is still not safe enough

Why low VOC paint is still not safe enough

December 16, 2016

University study involving 400 children shows that even low VOC paint can cause allergies or asthma – that’s why Little Knights is 100% VOC-free

Traditionally, paints have contained high levels of chemicals called VOCS (volatile organic compounds).  If you are familiar with the smell of a freshly painted room - this is caused by VOCs that evaporate as conventional paint dries. Some VOCs are known to cause dizziness and headaches, as well as skin and breathing complaints - others, such as formaldehyde and benzene, have even been classified as carcinogens.  That’s why Little Knights nursery paint has been formulated 100% VOC free, so it can be as safe as household paint gets.

The emergence of low VOC paints

As awareness of the danger of VOCs has increased, so we have seen the emergence of so-called low VOC paints onto the market. Low VOC paints tend to be water-based paints as the compounds used are considered healthier because they emit less fumes than high-polluting, oil-based paints and solvents.

Study finds children suffering from asthma and allergies

But doubts have now been cast on the safety of low VOC paints after ground-breaking research from a team of scientists from Harvard University and Sweden’s Kalstad University, found that children who sleep in bedrooms containing fumes from water-based paints and solvents are two to four times more likely to suffer allergies or asthma. The study of 400 children aged from 1 to 5 years identified only one group of VOCs as being associated with the higher levels of asthma, stuffy noses and eczema. This group was the PGEs (propylene glycol and glycol ethers) which are widely used in water-based paint.

“Apparent risks of PGEs at such low concentrations at home raise concerns for the vulnerability of infants and young children,” the report said.

Little Knights paint is totally VOC-free

Here at Little Knights, we feel it is studies like this that vindicate our decision to produce a range of paints that do not contain any VOCs, so families have complete peace of mind about the welfare of their children. Our paint is not low VOC, it is totally VOC-free. It is a water-based paint that is also free from carcinogens, petrochemicals and hazardous fumes of any kind.

Four beautiful odourless paint finishes

Matte

For a solid, flat and elegant finish that is easy to touch up when required, matte paint is ideal for creating a gentle, soothing finish.  It helps to conceal flaws too, making it a good choice for older walls with "character".

Eggshell

Has slightly more lustre than a matte finish, low-sheen rather than shiny.  This attractive finish resists stains better than matte paint, and is easier to maintain

Silk

Creates an attractive and highly durable high sheen finish, an ideal choice if you want to make a room look bigger.  While it is the easiest to clean (just wipe with a damp cloth) Silk paint’s light reflecting properties do make it more difficult to touch up because any difference in sheen will be apparent.  It will make imperfections in your walls more noticeable, so it is worth investing a bit of extra time on surface preparation to make your walls as smooth as possible.

Gloss

To compliment the range, our easy-to-apply, low-VOC non-drip antibacterial gloss paint provides a hardwearing, wipe-clean finish for interior and exterior wood and metal.
