Unlike modern constructions, older buildings (typically pre-1919 in the UK) were designed to self-regulate dampness, allowing moisture to naturally pass through their vapour-permeable lime mortar, render, and plaster.

Many off-the-shelf vinyl or acrylic emulsions unfortunately seal the surface, trapping moisture inside the walls, which can lead to significant damp problems and structural damage over time.
